Well, well, well...the other shoe dropped and Detroit Councilwoman Monica Conyers now faces a big fine and jail time for taking a bribe.
As an outspoken opponent of her failed tenure on the City Council, I chuckled when I heard the news she struck a plea deal for changing her vote, giving a company a $1.2 billion sludge removal deal. Then, I felt bad for the great city of Detroit and its ever-diminishing reputation.
Detroit's former mayor was a total embarrassment and a crook; it has council members that spew racist remarks and don't pay taxes (and do not feel they should have to if the city makes and error) and act like clowns running a clown school every time they meet.
Hopefully, this latest embarrassment will wake up the voters and get rid of the bad rubbish in the city. Also, I pray it will unite the good people in Detroit to move forward and truly change the culture of bad politics that has plagued the city for decades.
As for Conyers, she should receive fair treatment by the court. I will be watching to see if her husband, United States Representative John Conyers Jr., uses his influence to get her a light sentence. I also find his silence on the issue quite hilarious, though it shouldn't.
He is the man who doesn't think an investigation into his buddies at ACORN is warranted, despite the fact the organization faces multiple voter fraud charges, but thinks it's his duty to continue to slander the name of former President George Bush by claiming he is a war criminal. John Conyers even called for a war crimes investigation against the former President.
Both Conyers need to be removed from public office for good. If Mr. Conyers didn't know his wife was crooked, he can't be trusted to do what is best for his constituents.
I am glad the truth came out and Conyers has been found guilty, but I am sad Detroit takes another punch in the stomach.
Detroit is tough and it will survive this scandal. However, before the city and the region can move forward, the bad politicians need to be booted out the door.
Until next time, enjoy Michigan and use your vote to make a change.
