Today is my second installment of Five Days Of Thanks. Each day before Thanksgiving I am writing about one thing personal and one thing Michigan-related I am thankful for.
Personal:
I am thankful for my family. I have a great family. I have a mom and dad, two sisters, a brother, a step mom, three step brothers, several in-laws and extended family. I also have many friends I consider to be family. I've had arguments with family members but we have always remained close.
I am also very fortunate to have a great relationship with my parents. They each live in other states but we talk a lot. We discuss books, politics, religion, all sorts of things.
My family is good, and I am thankful for that.
Michigan:
I am thankful I grew up with two daily newspapers: The Detroit News and Free Press. I learned to read by opening the pages of the Liberal Freep in the morning and the Conservative News in the afternoon. That was back in the 1970s and 80s when both papers were giants and published everyday. Then came the Joint Operating Agreement between the organizations and the weekends offered shared editions. Then came the new plan of putting everything on the Web and only delivering three days a week.
It's a shame young people will miss out on the joy I had of reading two newspapers every day. Those papers also used to publish huge Sunday editions with bulky sections, full comics pages, and great sports coverage. Even when the newspapers do deliver, there are fewer pages, there is less news, and not many comics.
It's not the same, but I am thankful I grew up in a great newspaper own.
Until next time, enjoy Michigan and be thankful.
