Gov. Jennifer Granholm did something that I would have never guessed in a million years: She proposed to cut spending instead of just raising taxes to cover her outlandish spending. The spending cuts come in the form of a $212 million slashing to school funding.
With tax revenues dwindling because Granholm's tenure as governor has cost this state countless jobs consumer spending is down. When people spend less, the sales tax revenues drop and that money is a big part of what goes toward schools.
Here's the formula: Granholm's lousy leadership = less jobs = less buying = less sales taxes = less money to schools.
Of course, Granholm left open a 30-day window for the Legislature to "find" the money to put back in school funding.
Translation: She's hoping there will be a way to raise taxes - no matter how badly it hurts the taxpayers - so she can keep spending, spending, spending.
Honestly, I have no problem with cutting $212 million from schools. I know costs are rising but schools need to learn to spend less when the money dries up. We are in a recession and EVERY government organization should be forced to cut spending.
I would freeze spending on any new purchases of computers. In fact, if I could sell the computers that are in the schools now and break even, I'd do that.
Kids don't need computers to learn. Kids need to read, problem solve, do math, learn to write correctly, and sit through history classes that teach actual history and not the politically correct garbage they learn now.
Computers, music, art, drama, sports and other extracurricular activities are important but the basics need to be taught first.
So here's hoping Granholm and the useless Legislature continue to cut spending and maybe lower a tax or two to stimulate the economy.
Until next time, enjoy Michigan.
