"New Moon" was awful. I know that is sacrilege among the teen girls and their wacky moms who line up to be part of Team Edward or Team Jacob, but the movie was boring.
What I don't understand is why anyone likes - let alone loves - Bella. She is the most uninteresting person on the planet. Yet, she has two handsome monsters vying for her affection, plus one clown from her high school who could only be wimpier if he peed his pants when threatened by Jacob.
Let this be a lesson to all young girls: Monster boyfriend good; human boyfriend weak.
Back to Bella. What do we learn from her. Oh, we learn a lot. We learn that a boyfriend is your only reason to have a life. When Edward leaves, she sulks alone in her room for literally months, she ignores her dad, she alienates her friends, and she risks her life because that is when she can at least have a vision of her love. It doesn't matter to her that she is hurting the people who truly love her.
By the way, I thought Kristen Stewart, who plays Bella, was decent in the first movie, but she was horrible in "New Moon." She never smiles, she mopes, she has one tone of voice, and her idea of showing emotion is shivering.
Bella is the worst protagonist ever. Not only does she treat everyone in her life like expendable trash, she's selfish, uncaring, and generally stupid. Plus, when some vampire council eats a group humans alive, she just stands there and doesn't care because she is finally back with her true love.
All she wants is for Edward to turn her into a vampire so they can be together forever. Only her happiness matters. She refuses to believe being a vampire is bad. You lose your soul, you'll be damned to Hell once you finally die, and all you want to do it eat humans. That doesn't matter to Bella. In fact, she is warned if Edward bites her, a truce between the werewolves and vampires will be broken and that means certain death to many on each side. But, what does that matter as long as this spoiled brat gets her man?
This movie teaches young girls their worth is measured by the attention you get from boys; true love should be pursued at all costs (even your own soul or the death of others); family and friends don't even register when compared to a boyfriend, it's ok to use a boy who likes you as long as he is helping you get back the boy you really like (Jacob you poor bastard), and it's okay to risk your life because some boy will always be there to save you.
When it comes to Edward and Jacob, we learn that guys are meant to please women no matter what and what they want doesn't matter. Throughout the movie I kept hoping Jacob and Edward would realize they are wasting their time on that selfish twit, Bella, and go hangout together and find a couple girls that would appreciate them.
But that was not meant to be, like Bella and Edward's tragic love affair. By the way, why do they love each other? They never have any fun. Also, did we need to be beaten over the head by the movie's use of Romeo and Juliet?
"New Moon" may have been a good movie when placed in context of the entire Twilight series, but as a stand-alone movie, it was bad. And the message it sends young girls is awful.
