Why do we get so upset with the AIG execs who got bonuses and not the government who gave the company the money to pay those bonuses?
President Barack Obama, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Sen. Chris Dodd (D) knew those bonus clauses were there when they decided to give billions of our money to the failing business. No matter how often they lie about it, they approved the handouts, bonuses and all. I wonder if AIG's political contributions to the Democrats had anything to do with the payoff...er...payout.
People were so mad over the bonuses they picketed the executive's homes. I understand the outrage of us bailing out a failed business while those we think screwed it up get richer, but we have to keep perspective. I am glad most of the bonus money was returned because it was the decent thing to do, but we can't cheer as the government tries to punish the ones who kept the money through 90% taxes. That's not just unconstitutional, it's criminal. And every member of Congress who suggested such a punishment should be removed from office.
We need to refocus our outrage at our political leaders that care more about political paybacks and promoting personal agendas than they do the people. And don't think it's just the Democrats who are screwing this country. Sen. Arlen Spector and a few other Republicans were their suckling at the nipple of the Stimulus Package. (See www.the-classic-liberal.comfor more.) And don't get me started on the trillions of dollars of waste the Bush administration is responsible for.
I am tired of the political palm greasing at the national level - AND you should, too.
Not all of our outrage should be over financial issues. Take a look at Detroit City Council President Monica Conyers. True, Conyers and the rest of the Council have bungled millions of taxpayers dollars, but her immature attitude, racist remarks, constant bickering, insulting attitude and general incompetence should alone be enough to keep anyone from voting for her again - but I fear it won't.
Conyers' latest nonsense was accusing Councilperson Sheila Cockrel of messing around with someone else's man. 97.1 FM played the audio clip of Conyers' horribly offensive comments in recent days.
Conyers also got her ex-con brother a job on the city payroll, then denied she was related to the man, then said he was her brother after all. How this woman is an elected official amazes me.
We need to get angry at these officials who make a mockery of our political system. Don't follow the red herrings thrown out like "AIG bonuses" or "the suburbs want to steal your city."
We get the government we deserve. If we continue to allow these people to use us as a personal ATM adn embarrass their offices, then they will keep digging us into a bigger hole.
It's time to pay attention.
Until next time, enjoy Michigan.

The Detroit government is a complete disgrace. They dream of running a hard-core crooked political machine like in Chicago, but they just aren’t bright enough to pull it off. And the immaturity of these people is astounding!
Detroit and it’s people deserve so much better. There’s a way for good candidates to win in Detroit. But it starts with finding the right candidate, who’s willing to run a different kind of campaign, and who has mountains of courage.

Until the voters of Detroit vote for CHANGE, we’ve got no HOPE of anything being any different in the Council chambers.
The Democrats are counting on it.
