After the Super Bowl, I always have a slight feeling of sadness. Even if the team I want to wins actually wins.
The end of the Super Bowl means the end of football until the fall. And I really like watching football.
As for last night's game, my prediction was wrong. I said the Indianapolis Colts would win 31-23. I am not upset I was wrong. I am glad the New Orleans Saints were able to bring home the Lombardi Trophy. The city deserves something good.
So does Detroit, so hopefully we can experience that feeling before the year 2246.
There were some interesting things about the game, the halftime show, and commercials:
- In an earlier post, I wrote Saints head coach Sean Payton didn't have a signature game where he made adjustments to earn a win. He does now. The on-side kick to open the second half won the Super Bowl for his team. New Orleans also made some changes on defense after the Colts got out to a 10-0 lead.
- Peyton Manning has all the stats in the world but he will be dogged by the perception he struggles in big games until he plays better in playoffs and adds at least one more championship to his resumé.
- It was nice to hear Brett Favre mentioned only once during the game. I thought the announces would bring up Favre at least five times; talking about whether he was going to retire or not. If John Madden called the game, we would have heard Favre mentioned at least three times per quarter.
- For the most part, the commercials stunk. Doritos had a few good ones - especially the one where the kid gets in the face of his mom's date - and a few misses - the guy in the coffin was stupid. I liked the commercial with Betty White and Abe Vigoda, though I can't remember what company it was promoting.
- I grew up loving The Who, but they were awful. They weren't as bad as the Rolling Stones when the Super Bowl was in Detroit but they were bad. I know the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction of a few years ago has the NFL nervous about halftime entertainment, but do they really have to dust off bands that haven't been relevant in 20 years each year?
- Jim Nance does a great job calling games. He was also pretty funny on "How I Met Your Mother."
Now that Super Bowl XlIV is over, it is time to start counting down to the NFL Draft - the yearly Super Bowl for Lions fans - and then training camp before the regular season.
I can't wait.
