The other day I posted about how the government can provide some help to people who need it through programs designed to provide food, shelter, and daycare.
My good friend and conservative blogger - The Classic Liberal - took a little shot at me for my "Socialist" ways. I don't mind and her is what he posted on my blog:
You like helping families? Then open up your wallet, or cut some checks! How about supporting the elimination of the income tax so they can earn more in the first place? Invest in a company with a nuclear power plant!
I could go on here … On health care, government is currently 40% of the cost in your insurance premium! How about cutting government out? Opening up trade across state lines?
Hey, somebody had to give you a hard time.
I agree with his points. I do oppose high taxes. I think the government should stay out of health care (but could offer some help to those who can't afford it). I also donate to worthy causes that feed people and volunteer for MCREST when my church hosts it.
I understand how people are afraid to pay taxes in the hopes the government will spend the money wisely, but my point all along is if we had frugal leaders with common sense then we could have low taxes but still maintain a strong defense and provide some basic help for people who need assistance - not handouts but legitimate help.
I understand we are responsible for our actions and we are the product of our decisions good and bad. And people put themselves in bad situations but that doesn't mean we should turn our backs on them.
For example, my church has a daycare and many of the families that use it get some help with the costs from the state.
I know many will think I didn't have those kids and I shouldn't have to care for them...blah...blah...blah. I agree we shouldn't have to pay to raise those kids but a little help isn't so bad. If we could just get rid of government waste then we could help the needy.
But, the needy need to help themselves first. No free rides.
I think there is a social cost to living in a society. We all need to kick in for a military, education, roads, and a few other basic needs for the people.
I guess that might make me a Socialist, but I think we can be a nation that helps its citizens. TheCL is correct when he says a good way to help people is to let them keep most of the money they earn.
I know all my arguments for the government offering help to those in need fall short because the government can't control spending and most every program is soured by politics.
But I can dream, can't I?
